No TV Challenge
Last week, Judah and I took a step that (for us) isn’t actually as big as it sounds.
We got rid of our TV. Tucked away in an armoire in the corner of our bedroom, we never really saw it. With Netflix and Hulu, we hardly ever used it. We don’t even have cable, so it wasn’t a big deal to get rid of it. We just finally decided that it was collecting too much dust, and taking up too much space. So our poor little TV has been consigned to the Craig’s List pile.
Although we didn’t really use our TV, getting rid of it is somewhat symbolic for us. By most people’s standards, we probably don’t watch very much TV. But we’ve decided that for this summer, “not very much TV” is too much TV. So, we’ve decided that for the months of June, July, and August, we are instating the official “No TV Challenge!”
We had quite a bit of discussion and indecisiveness about the extent of our TV restrictions. What about when I’m home by myself on my day off? Can I have the TV on in the background while I’m cleaning or sewing? What about Judah’s lunch break? Can he watch something and relax? What about if the next season of Doctor Who comes out this summer?!
We decided that TV shows will be completely restricted for the summer. Unless, of course, the next season of Doctor Who comes out (which is not likely). No shame. But other than that, our goal is to use the times that we watch TV to do other things, like going outside and throwing a frisbee around, having a date-night-in, or perhaps listening to an audiobook while sewing (audiobook suggestions welcome!). My personal goal is to spend less time watching TV and more time being creative, which includes writing more blog posts. I plan to post something on my blog every Wednesday, and if I don’t, feel free to politely bug me about it.
So that’s about the gist of my No TV Challenge. Anyone else up for taking the challenge with me? This week, I’m challenging you track the amount of hours you spend watching TV each week, and consider taking this challenge with me. Or maybe TV isn’t a problem for you. Maybe it’s Facebook, or Pinterest, or Candy Crush... or any number of things. I just know that, for me, it’s time to get away from the screen, and spend my time doing things more worthwhile. Anyone with me? =)
Good for you guys! I gave up TV for lent and it was such a nice experience! I've decided to extend my no TV time except for one or two shows every now and then...I've just realized how much I've been able to get done without it. Hope it goes well!!!
ReplyDeleteYou will do well with this! Let your creativity run wild, enjoy time with each other, sometimes just doing nothing is a great experience too!
ReplyDeleteI really love A Series of Unfortunate Events on audio. :) Tim Curry is a fabulous narrator. Also Peter and the Starcatchers.
