Curriculum
Let me begin by saying that math and reading are learned at individual levels and paces for our kids, but other subjects, such as history or art, are done together as a family.
Math
We use a lot of manipulatives and games, as well as incorporating math into everyday life as much as possible. We have also enjoyed the simple, straightforward approach of Miquon Math Labs for both of our kids.
Reading
For both of our kids, we started with learning letter sounds, followed by CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words and basic sight words. We then used the Dash Into Learning books to bridge the gap between reading words and reading books.
History
Learning history is done through reading āliving booksā and experiencing the world. Another helpful tool has been a Book of Centuries.
Science
We study science through nature and real world experience as much as possible. Field trips, hikes, and gardening supply the hands-on experience, and books are used to answer further questions.
Spanish
We use TalkBox.Mom for the bulk of our Spanish study, but also practice our Spanish through learning songs and reading books.
Other Resources
While we are not following a specific open-and-go curriculum at this moment, we have enjoyed Blossom & Root in the past. We have occasionally used unit studies purchased from other companies as well.
