Gabby
Before we begin, sorry it's taken me so long to get this post up! For those of you just joining us now, I'm in the middle of a series about my students from China. As you can see, I'm in the process of restructuring my blog. If you have any suggestions on how to make it more fun and user-friendly, let me know. So, here we go....
Gabby is so fun. Really, she’s just so fun. She is sixteen and describes herself as very outgoing and friendly. She was very popular among her classmates, but was also a very good student. She was the class monitor and one of my best students. However, she never seemed like a teacher’s pet or goody-two-shoes. It was hard not to like her.
She was definitely a leader among her peers. She had keys to the classroom. She gave instructions to other students when needed. She always had all the answers.
It could have been easy to write all that off to her status in the town. Her parents had very good jobs (as opposed to being farmers). She had nice clothes. Her peers described her as being very rich. But I don’t think that’s what drew others to her. I think it was her kind heart and magnetic, fun-loving personality.
She also sings, which is really cool. She has a beautiful voice.
Before I left, she wrote me a letter. Here is just an excerpt.
“Can I call you sister? You only 2 years old than me. In this days, we went class. Played games together. So I think you have known me a little. I’m an outgoing girl. I like making friends with everyone. I pay attention to this feeling which from us. You will leaving in some days. I grudge to leave you. But I think we will meet in a few years.”
I cried when I read this (confession: I’m tearing up right now as I write this). I sincerely hope I can see her again in a few years. Leaving her was very difficult. But, I will continue trying to do as she told me:
“Happy every day!”

She designed this dress for our toilet paper wedding dress competition. She knew my tastes and made it in the style I like. |

I have been looking forward to your Gabby post! She definitely is a sweet, special girl. I don't think I will ever forget how brave (and amazing!) she was to get up and sing that whole song in front of everyone.. and how she cried when we all left. But yes - Happy EVERY day! ;)
