Herringbone

Isn't herringbone a fun word? Judah and I went to a fabric store the other day, just down the road. I'm new to sewing, so I was a little intimidated by it. We walked in the store, and it was huge and overwhelming.  But the coolest part is the "bargain loft" which sells fabric for $1.99/yard, which is awesome. That's where I did my shopping.  I got some navy blue cotton, which I made a skirt with, following this tutorial.  It was super easy, but unfortunately, it didn't look very good on me. It puffed out in all the wrong places and made my lower half look rather like a mushroom.  Fortunately for me, that wasn't the only fabric I bought.  Judah found some bags of scraps which were only $2 each, so I got a bag.  There was a surprising amount of awesomeness in the bag, including this fantastic herringbone stuff.

My favorite skirt that I own is a pencil skirt, and this fabric was basically screaming "Make me into a pencil skirt!" Don't you hear it?  So I followed this tutorial.  This fabric isn't super stretchy, though, so I had to install a zipper.  Actually, I've always been intimidated by zippers. They seem really complicated, but I found yet another tutorial that made installing a zipper pretty simple! You should try it some time.

What was the final result, you ask?  Well, I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out.  It's not perfect {I can't sew in a straight line}, but you can hardly notice the mistakes.  Here it is!

Not bad, eh? I could actually wear this in public!

  1. That's a good professional looking skirt! Very nice for a teacher/social worker.
