Home Preschool: Music
I know I say that every theme we learn about is fun, but this was really fun. And it was perfect timing, because Auntie Erin (a music teacher) was visiting us for part of the time. Pumpkin had lots of fun exploring different types of music, and I'm looking forward to integrating what we learned into our everyday lives in the future.
Here are the activities we did:
We pasted pictures of instruments onto the letter M (for music, of course!). We watched short YouTube clips of each instrument as we pasted them. Pumpkin's favorite was the piano, though she said she also liked the djembe and the accordion.
We practiced keeping a steady beat with a drum and with our hands on our laps. Farmyard Beat (see below) was a perfect book to practice with, and now we often chant random things with the same cadence that we heard in the book. Fig! Fig! Figgity Fig! (In reference to our new cat, of course.)
We listened to many different genres of music, including some that I had never heard before. Pumpkin's favorites were jazz (also known as Charlie Brown music) and what she calls, "ballet music." She also like reggae and salsa, but did not like Zydeco or country. But still, I enjoyed adding different genres to my daily listening playlist.
We moved to the music! There's a reason Pumpkin prefers "ballet music." We did quite a bit of "ballet" during this unit. We also listened to the Carnival of the Animals and moved around like the the animals featured in each song, and read the corresponding poems from the book listed below. Flight of the Bumblebee was also a favorite.
We made our own music! We used drums, shaky eggs, tambourines, piano, and our voices! Pumpkin is always singing, but this week, she also really enjoyed playing the piano with Auntie Erin.
Here are the books we read:
It's really important to me that I teach my children to embrace and appreciate multiple, diverse styles of music, and I wanted our book selection to reflect that. Our library did not disappoint!
