Field Trip: Civil War Museum

We've spent the last several weeks learning about slavery, the Underground Railroad, and the Civil War (more on that in a future post). So we decided to take a visit to the Civil War Museum. This museum is not designed for children, so I planned to spend a short amount of time there, and would recommend the same for anyone going with children. Another recommendation for families visiting with children is to be aware that some of the rooms contain accurate depictions of war that are not kid-friendly. However, it was really neat to walk through and look at real artifacts from the time period. The girls enjoyed seeing the uniforms of the different soldiers, as well as the exhibit depicting what an army camp site would have looked like.

Of course, I forgot to take pictures until we were more than halfway through. Here is one of the few interactive exhibits, where you could listen to Civil War era army songs, bugle calls, and even spirituals.

They also have a temporary exhibit about the abolitionist movement. Unfortunately, this exhibit did not contain much that was interesting for kids, but we did spend some time fan-girling over this slip of paper with Frederick Douglass's actual signature on it!
