Practical Math: Bake Sale and Yard Sale

Our neighborhood has a neighborhood-wide yard sale twice a year, and this fall was the first time we've been able to participate. I encouraged the girls to do a bake sale during the yard sale, because I felt that it would be a great practical application for the math skills they've been working on.

We estimated how much we spent on ingredients, then figured out how much to charge for each item in order to make a profit. Pumpkin wrote and decorated this sign to hang on the table.

Both girls handled all of the transactions with customers themselves, needing only minimal help from me. I got quite a few compliments from our customers about how well the girls were doing! The girls nearly sold out on every item, and saw the results of all their hard work. They've decided that the bake sale is going into the vacation fund, and they're already dreaming about where to go next!
