A Dutch Holiday

January-term has a much more relaxed feel to it. Most people have less work than a normal semester, myself included. So, I decided to explore my heritage a bit, as well as use some fun Christmas gifts that I had received.

We started off making stroopwafels (Dutch for “syrup waffles”), which a lot of people have never heard of, which I think is sad. If you don’t know what they are, continue reading and you will learn. If you do know what they are, read anyway.

First, Judah, Matt, and I worked on the dough. While it was rising, Matt and Erin had a rousing game of...
It's actually Pennsylvania Dutch, but that's close enough.

Then it was time to cook the wafels. We were supposed to make them into little balls, but we found that flattening them a bit made them easier to press.

Then we squeezed them into a pizzelle press that was given to me for Christmas. (You can also make little cannoli with it. That might have to be my next project.)

After we took them out, Judah sliced each one thinly in half.... (what skill!)

....spread them with syrup, and put the halves back together!

And then we ate them!!

As was fitting, we also had speculaas, which most people know as windmill cookies.

If you’re interested, here is a great video of the process of making stroopwafels. It’s pretty crazy. We haven’t quite developed his stroopwafel-making skills.

Maybe next time I’ll try making German food. Any suggestions?

Thanks!
