Field Trip: Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum

Since we've been learning about the American Revolution, we wanted to get a taste of what life was like "in the old days," as Sweet Pea says. So we took a trip to the Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum.  This museum doesn't focus on the Revolution, but rather, focuses on Pennsylvania German history, with a focus on farming. However, it was a really great opportunity for the girls to see what life would have been like hundreds of years ago.

A few of the buildings were open for a self-guided tour, but we also took a guided tour. The museum is not busy on weekdays, so we were the only people in the tour, which means we got to ask lots of questions.

There were many different buildings to peek into, including a house, pottery, tinsmith, blacksmith, farmstead, and log cabin.

During our walk over to the log cabin, we were surprised to find real horses on the property!

Here is the farmstead, one of the original buildings in the village.

During our guided tour, we went into several other buildings, such as this tavern below. We saw many different historical cooking tools and learned how women would have cooked during that time period. Someone please give me this kitchen!

We also learned about how flax is turned into linen, and saw how linen can be woven into tape, with Pumpkin was especially fascinated with. She is now very interested in learning how to weave linen on a loom.

Among many other things, we also explored a large barn filled with historical farming equipment.
