Monday Makings: Watercolor Lavender Cake

This cake ended up being an all-occasion cake: St. Patrick's Day, Pumpkin's half birthday, and a friends birthday (sort of... I had planned it for her birthday last month, but couldn't get the ingredients in time). But really, does one actually need an occasion for cake?

I've never made a watercolor cake before, so I wanted to give it a try. It wasn't as difficult as I expected. Basically, as you're covering the sides of the cake with untinted frosting, you add blobs of tinted frosting here and there, and then smooth the side of cake as you normally would. I then put both colors, lavender and periwinkle, in one piping bag and made cute little blobs on top of the cake.

The inside of the the cake is a lavender cake, made from this recipe. The frosting is a simple buttercream, made by Judah. For the cake, I doubled the recipe and split into four equal parts. Why four? Well, that's my favorite part about this cake!

Purple ombre! If you ever decide to make a cake like this, be sure to use concentrated gels, like these. For the darker layers, you will need a lot of food coloring and using that much liquid coloring will change the consistency of your batter.

Both the ombre and the watercolor effects were pretty simple, and I'm looking forward to trying these techniques again! I think I see more cake in my future! How horrible...

Now excuse me while I go eat a piece of cake.
