Unit Study: Voting
Around the time of the primaries, we took a few days to learn about voting. Here are the books we read:
Pizza and Taco: Who's the Best? by Stephen Shaskan
Your Voice, Your Vote, by Leah Henderson
I Voted: Making a Choice Makes a Difference, by Mark Shulman
I had originally just planned on reading these books, then taking the girls to vote with me, but that ended up not working because one of them was feeling under the weather. Fortunately, learning happens whether or not we plan on it. Pumpkin was explaining to me why she wishes we used salted butter instead of unsalted butter, and I suggested we vote on it.
She created ballots and a polling station. She chose visual ballots to make it fair for everyone in the house, including those who can't read yet.
We also discussed other ways to make voting fair, such as the right to privacy, and having access to information on both options. Pumpkin made a campaign banner and tried to persuade others to vote for her favorite option. During breakfast, we discussed the pros and cons of both options, and then each took a turn voting. After counting the results, the girls were elated to find that their choice won.
