Gardening School
Helping with a family garden lends itself so well to so many different types of learning throughout the year, so I hesitate to label this as a "unit study." Both girls participated in planning and tending both our vegetable and flower gardens. One thing that we were able to observe over the most recent growing season is the relationship between wildlife and their habitats. We were easily able to observe the increase in wildlife and pollinators in our yard as we intentionally created habitats for them, particularly with native plants. Pumpkin also read books about insects to learn about common garden pests that were visiting (and eating) our garden.
Pumpkin also decided that she would like to grow tomatoes and make tomato sauce. She read seed catalogs and researched the type of tomatoes needed to make sauce. She also helped with upkeep and harvesting.
We are all very excited for the next growing season and have begun our plans! Sweet Pea is very interested in starting her "practice farm" for when she grows up and becomes a farmer.
