Puerto Rico Trip Day 6: Old San Juan and the Journey Home

We started off the morning with breakfast at Chocobar Cortes. The food was excellent, and the girls were thrilled to have chocolate pancakes topped with... more chocolate!

From there, we walked to Castillo San Felipe del Morro, also known as El Morro. Pumpkin was dismayed at the sight of the long walk, but it ended up feeling shorter than we expected. Once inside, we were able to explore several exhibits, learning about the creation and history of the fort, as well as its strategic importance in the Caribbean during the colonial era.

After dodging some raindrops (and drying off very quickly due to the high winds), we explored the exterior portions of the fort, including some sentry boxes that the girls were excited to go into, after reading about them in the Rafi and Rosi books.

After leaving El Morro, we were feeling hot and tired, and stopped for piraguas (shaved ice). We had been hoping for piraguas the whole trip, and this was our first opportunity to get some.

We then headed back to the lawn of El Morro, where people often fly kites. We had read about this beforehand, and had brought a small, packable kite.

The girls had both requested to return to the pigeon park, so we did just that after flying our kite. This time, we wore hats, which was more comfortable when having a pigeon perch on your head. Sweet Pea also decided to keep her arms at her side, because only wanted pigeons on her head, and not on her arms. This seemed to work well for her.

We enjoyed our last meal in Puerto Rico at El Jibarito, of course with one last pina colada! Then we headed to the airport to begin the trek home. We were all feeling a bit out of sorts on the way home, but we packed the chocolates we had bought at Chocobar Cortes earlier, which was a nice treat. We were all glad to crash into our beds when we arrived home late at night.
